Frequently Asked Questions

Does a rook piercing hurt?

The procedure is certainly uncomfortable and really depends on your pain tolerance. Rook piercing pain can be reduced by a pre-applied numbing cream. Or you can take paracetamol prior to the piercing. Any initial pain will only last about 30 minutes afterwards.

What is the rook piercing healing time?

Everyone heals at a different rate and it does take a while. A few months will take care of the primary healing stage. Up to 18 months is perfectly normal for the secondary healing process.

During this time there’s no need to twist or push the jewellery – in fact, it’s important to keep it as still as possible.

What are rook piecing benefits?

Rook piercing for migraines is subject to opinion – but this is an anxiety point used within Chinese medicine. The nice dull ache that’s experienced reduces stress and the pressure prevents anxiety in some cases.

Rook piercing aftercare

Try to avoid public bodies of water such as swimming pools, Jacuzzis, and the sea. All of these contain bacteria that can cause healing issues and potential infections.

Keep the piercing clean as detailed below. And don’t use bottle cleaners that contain alcohol. Don’t touch the piercing without firstly sterilising your hands. Try to limit the ear from your mobile phone. Don’t sleep on that side. And be extra careful when brushing your hair.

How to clean rook piercing?

One of the best cleansers is sea salt in distilled water. Mix together and shake well. Pour the solution into a serialised cup or glass – avoid paper or plastic containers as they can contaminate the sea salt solution.

Warm the mix in the microwave for a few seconds for it to reach body temperature – just lukewarm. Either submerge the ear in the solution for up to 15 minutes. Or take a paper towel and soak it in the microwaved solution and hold it onto the piercing for around 15 minutes.

Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Repeat this process in the morning and at night. You may find it more convenient to use a piercing aftercare spray made with sea salt.

Is there a risk of infection?

Rook piercing infection can be quite common. Especially if cleaning isn’t carried out on a regular basis. The following are signs of infection:

  • Pain that is quite unbearable – and persists for longer than a few days
  • Throbbing and redness – particularly if lasting more than a week
  • Fever – if you feel nauseous and have a high temperature
  • Heavy discharge – yellow, green, or bloody discharge is abnormal

All of the above symptoms require you to see a doctor as soon as you can for help and advice.

Finally…

You’ll find the optimum choice of rook earrings available from your piercer – including titanium and gold ranges. These ideally need to be re-inserted for you professionally as leaving the hole open for any length of time may cause it to begin to close. Remember that variety is forever and you can simply enjoy your rook piercing ongoing.
